In search of ways to restore Ukrainian statehood, nationally conscious writers, historians, public figures of the 19th-20th centuries persistently turned to the heroic history of our people. Reproducing the events of the glorious past, they contributed to the formation of a sense of unity with their people, pride in their greatness, anger towards enemies, and refuted sceptical statements about the existence of the Ukrainian nation or Ukrainian statehood in general. Ukrainian narodniks – Mykola Kostomarov, Mykhailo Maksymovych, Volodymyr Antonovych and others – put a lot of work into strengthening the sense of ethno-psychological unity of Ukrainians, awareness of the importance of their own state formation idea. In the future, these ideas were developed by Mykhailo Hrushevskyi, Stepan Rudnytskyi, Sergey Shelukhin, etc. To solve individual tasks, the research used methods: descriptive, comparativehistorical, structural using the method of component analysis and elements of statistical analysis.
