Abstract

Background. Thematically and genre-rich dramaturgy of Ivan Karpenko- Karyi, one of the founders of Ukrainian professional theater, vividly represents the living language culture of the second half of the 19th century. The playwright's plays well reflect the state and peculiarities of the language of the era, which is a valuable historical and linguistic source for researchers.

Methods. The study of the vocabulary of Ivan Karpenko-Karyi's play "One Hundred Thousand" was carried out using descriptive, comparative-historical, and linguo-cultural methods of studying and analyzing the text, based on which the specificity of the linguistic units of the work was investigated.

Resultations. Ivan Karpenko-Karyi masterfully recreates the linguistic flavor of the era. The basis of the characters' speech parts is colloquial, commonly used vocabulary, which contains many colloquialisms, phraseological units, proverbs and sayings, which aptly reflect the type of personality. Folklore elements make the language of the peasants bright, imaginative, authentic, and lively.

Conclusions. Ivan Karpenko-Karyi in the play "One Hundred Thousand" appears as a great expert in colloquial vocabulary and phraseology. The author skillfully uses commonly used words to denote everyday life, everyday objects, vocabulary to denote professional agricultural and social orientation.

The language of Ivan Karpenko-Karyi's tragicomedy "One Hundred Thousand" well reflects the worldview of the Ukrainian people of that time, the peculiarities of their speech, their lexical and expressive potential.
